Getting started
Simple Finance keeps your budgets, transactions, net worth, and retirement plan in one private app. Nothing you enter leaves your device unless you turn on your own iCloud sync.
- Add a transaction. On the Transactions tab, tap + and log an expense or income โ that's the heartbeat of the app.
- Set a budget. On the Budget tab, give each category a monthly amount and watch spending fill in as bars or rings.
- Track your net worth. On the Net Worth tab, add your accounts, investments, property, and loans.
- Explore the tabs along the bottom, and tap Fin (top-left of Home) to ask questions in plain English.
New to the app? Open Settings โ Help & Support โ Replay Welcome Tour for a guided walkthrough, or turn on Demo Mode to explore a fully-loaded example with sample data โ your own data stays empty and comes right back when you exit.
Everyday money
โAdding transactionsโถ
- On the Transactions tab, tap + (top right) and choose Income, Expense, or Transfer.
- Enter the merchant and amount. Expenses need a category; pick "No Category" if you'd rather not.
- Attach a receipt: tap "Attach Receipt", or use the receipt-scan icon on the tab to snap a photo โ it reads the merchant, amount, and date for you to apply.
- Split one expense across categories with "Split across categories", or split a bill between people with "Split this bill" โ enter the full total and only your share is recorded.
๐Recurring transactions & billsโถ
- On the Transactions tab, tap Recurring (top left).
- Add a recurring item: merchant, amount, category, income vs expense, and the day of the month it's due.
- See all your upcoming bills and paydays with their due dates in one place.
- Optional: turn on Auto-Post in Settings to log them automatically each month (off by default โ you stay in control).
๐Budgets โ monthly, annual & ringsโถ
- On the Budget tab, switch between Monthly and Annual with the View picker at the top.
- Set each category's monthly and annual budget when you add or edit it โ and give it any color you like.
- Switch the category list between Bars and Rings for a different view of the month.
- Move between months with the โน โบ arrows. Tap the calendar icon to set a custom budget for that one month only โ it won't change your other months.
- Annual view tracks your spending year-to-date against each category's annual budget.
๐ฏGoals & debt payoffโถ
- On the Home tab, tap + on Goals.
- Savings or investing goal: set a target, then link transactions to it (e.g. money you move to savings or investments) to build progress.
- Debt payoff goal: link a mortgage, auto loan, or other debt account โ progress tracks automatically as the balance drops.
- Pay extra principal: add a Transfer, set its type to "Extra Principal", and link it to the goal.
๐คFin โ your money assistantโถ
- Tap the "Fin" button at the top-left of the Home screen to open the assistant.
- Ask anything about your money in plain English โ "How am I doing this month?", "What did I spend on dining last year?", "Can I afford $300 more in savings?"
- Ask for a chart ("chart income vs spending for 2024 and 2025") and Fin builds it from your real numbers.
- Get a one-tap month or year report, and let Fin suggest money moves you can apply with a tap.
- It all runs on your device with Apple Intelligence โ your finances never leave your phone. You can also ask Siri.
Net worth & assets
๐ธTrack an account (money flow)โถ
- In Net Worth, tap an account โ Balance Tracking โ turn on "Track balance from transactions".
- Turn on "Default account for new transactions" so new entries auto-pick it.
- Each transaction's Account picker decides what it draws from โ the balance updates automatically.
- The Transactions tab shows that balance up top; tap it for a bank-style statement with a running balance after every transaction.
- Move money with a Transfer (From โ To). If a balance ever drifts, use Reconcile to set the real amount โ your transactions stay intact.
๐Investments & retirement accountsโถ
- In Net Worth, tap the Stocks segment at the top.
- Add an investment account โ Brokerage, Roth or Traditional IRA, SEP/SIMPLE IRA, 401(k), 403(b), 457, TSP, HSA, or 529 โ with the + on Investment Accounts.
- Add stocks or funds by ticker (AAPL, VTI, VOO) and share count. Prices are fetched automatically and update daily.
- Track contributions: on a retirement or HSA account, enter what you've put in this year and see it against the IRS limit.
- Crypto works the same way in its own section. Tap Refresh anytime for the latest prices.
๐ Real estate & rentalsโถ
- In Net Worth, tap + โ Add Account โ Rental Property (residential, multi-family, short-term, commercial, or land).
- Enter the value, monthly rent, operating expenses, and attach a mortgage โ equity is figured for you.
- Tap the property for full investor analytics: cash flow, cap rate, cash-on-cash, the 1% rule, total ROI, appreciation, and tax depreciation.
- Optional: turn on auto value updates to appreciate (or depreciate) the value at a rate you set โ or update it by hand anytime.
- Tag transactions to a property to track its actual income and expenses for the year.
๐ฆMortgages & loansโถ
- In Net Worth, tap + and add a liability โ Mortgage, Auto Loan, Credit Card, HELOC, Personal, Medical, Tax, Business, or other loan โ and enter the amount owed.
- For a mortgage, tap it and choose "Set Up Loan" to add the interest rate, term, monthly payment, property tax, home insurance, PMI, and any extra principal.
- You'll get a full payment breakdown, amortization, and payoff projections.
- For auto and other loans, the Auto Loan and Loan calculators in Tools model the payments and payoff for you.
๐ทImport accounts from a photo or CSVโถ
- In Net Worth, tap + โ Import from Photo or CSV.
- Snap a photo of an account list, balance sheet, or spreadsheet โ we read each line and guess whether it's a home, car, investment, loan, and so on.
- Or import a CSV (Name, Type, Balance) โ copy the built-in template to get started.
- Review every row, fix any name, type, or amount, then approve โ nothing is added until you do.
Reports & tools
๐Trends โ month & yearโถ
- The Net Worth tab's Period Changes card shows how your net worth moved month over month.
- On the Budget tab, step through months with the โน โบ arrows to compare spending.
- Build a report (share icon) and turn on the Year-over-Year section to compare this year against last.
๐Reports & exportingโถ
- Tap the share icon on Home, Budget, Transactions, or Net Worth to open the report builder.
- Pick a time period โ This/Last Month, Year to Date, This/Last Year, or Pick a Year โ to run a report for any past year.
- Choose which sections to include: cash flow, spending, Budget Rings, Money Flow, trends, net worth, top merchants, and a year-over-year comparison.
- Reports include your back-filled historical data, so prior years show real numbers. Preview the whole thing, then share as image, PDF, or CSV.
- Back up everything: Settings โ Data & Backup โ Export. Keep the file somewhere safe.
๐งฎTools & calculatorsโถ
- The Tools tab has calculators for Mortgage / Loan, Retirement, Student Loan, Credit Card, Auto Loan, and Compound Interest.
- Spending Insights breaks down where your money actually goes.
- Save any calculation to revisit or tweak it later.
๐๏ธCustomize your dashboardโถ
- On the Home screen, tap "Customize Dashboard" at the bottom.
- Drag to reorder cards, tap โ to hide one, or add new ones from the list.
- Add Budget Rings (a colorful ring per category), a Money Flow diagram, year-to-date rings, and more.
- It's all optional โ your Home screen, your way.
Retirement Planner
The Retirement Planner (Plan tab) is a full simulation of your financial life, one year at a time, from today to the end of your plan. It starts pre-filled from the accounts, loans, rentals, and income you already track โ so your first plan is real, not hypothetical. Everything below is also built into the app under Plan โ the gear/โ menu โ How the Planner Works and Concepts & Terms.
๐งญGetting started with your planโถ
- Open the Plan tab and tap From My Data to build a plan from your real accounts (or Blank Plan to start fresh).
- Work the Getting Started card: confirm your income, set your retirement spending, add your big life events, and clear the Plan Checkup.
- The Checkup (top of Analyze) audits your inputs continuously โ a phantom dividend, a double-counted budget, partner data with no partner โ and tells you exactly where to fix each one. It never changes anything itself.
- Everything is editable โ people, accounts, income, expenses, life events, taxes, strategy โ and the projection updates instantly. Amounts are always in today's dollars; the simulator handles inflation.
๐Life events & planning as a coupleโถ
The Milestones library covers the big ones, pre-filled and editable:
- Get Married โ a partner's assets join, their salary starts, household costs rise, and filing status flips to married-joint at the wedding year.
- Have a Child โ an 18-year expense stream, not a one-off.
- Build or buy a house โ down payment, new mortgage, extra principal, and running costs folded in; fund it by selling your current home with the capital-gains exclusion applied.
- A new car every N years, college, long-term care, career breaks, downsizing, and more.
Planning with a partner before you combine finances? Under People & Retirement, add your partner and their assets (retirement, cash, car, and more). These live in the plan only โ they won't appear in your Net Worth tab until you combine finances โ and the report splits starting net worth into "You" and your partner so it still reconciles with your personal number.
๐ฒHow your odds are testedโถ
Three ways to pressure-test the same plan:
- Average โ one path using your assumed returns.
- Monte Carlo โ 500 randomized futures, giving your success rate and the shaded uncertainty cone.
- History replay โ your plan re-run from every start year since 1928 with real market data (retiring into 1929, 1966, or 2000).
If all three look good, the plan is robust. Your success rate is how often every single year of spending was funded without running out โ 80%+ is generally strong. A 100% score doesn't mean guaranteed; it means your plan survived every path the simulation threw at it. Educational, not financial advice.
๐Concepts & terms (glossary)โถ
Today's $ vs Future $ โ "Today's $" strips out inflation so every future year is in current purchasing power (the default, and the honest way to read a long chart). "Future $" shows raw inflated numbers, which is why they look enormous.
Financial independence (FI) โ 25ร your annual retirement spending (a 4% withdrawal rate). Coast FI is the point where your existing investments, with zero new contributions, would still reach your FI number by retirement.
Safe withdrawal rate โ the share of your investable money you pull out each year. Persistently above ~5% is historically hard to sustain; under 4% has survived nearly every period on record.
Social Security timing โ claim at 62 and your benefit is permanently ~70%; wait to 70 and it grows to ~124% (about +8%/yr). Waiting is the cheapest longevity insurance and raises the survivor's check for a couple. The in-app optimizer sweeps every claim age against your numbers.
Roth conversions โ in the low-income gap years between retiring and RMDs, moving pre-tax money to Roth on purpose fills the low brackets cheaply and shrinks the forced RMDs (and Medicare surcharges) later.
RMDs โ from age 73โ75 the IRS forces a rising withdrawal from pre-tax accounts, taxed as income, whether you need it or not. Big pre-tax balances can spike your bracket late in life.
Guardrails โ instead of spending the same amount while a portfolio crashes, discretionary spending trims when your withdrawal rate drifts too high and recovers when investments run ahead. Essential expenses are never trimmed.
Glide path โ heavy in stocks while young, easing toward bonds as retirement nears, then holding โ reducing sequence-of-returns risk at its peak.
The full glossary โ Monte Carlo, gain harvesting, IRMAA, the after-tax estate, ACA premiums, estate tax, the spending smile, and more โ lives in the app under Plan โ Concepts & Terms. Everything here is educational, not personalized financial advice.
Sharing, sync & alerts
โ๏ธSync across your devicesโถ
- Turn on Settings โ iCloud Sync on each device signed into the same Apple ID (iPhone, iPad, Mac), then restart the app.
- Install the app on a new device and your accounts, budgets, and history are already there.
- Edits on one device appear on the others automatically. Turn it off anytime in Settings โ iCloud Sync.
- It's your private iCloud database โ nothing is shared with us or anyone else.
๐ชShare with a spouse or familyโถ
- Open Settings โ iCloud Sharing.
- A spouse or partner gets full two-way live syncing โ you both see and edit the same accounts, transactions, budgets, and goals.
- Family members get a read-only summary you control, updated automatically.
- Send invites through Messages and pick the person directly โ don't copy the link. Use Household Notes, a shared board for money notes, on the Family screen or as a Home card.
๐Notifications & smart alertsโถ
- Settings โ Notifications: enable budget alerts, bill reminders, goal milestones, and a weekly check-in from Fin.
- Budget alerts tell you the moment a category crosses your threshold (and again if you go over).
- Smart Money Alerts add optional nudges: large purchases, unusual spending, cash-flow warnings, bill changes, a month-end summary, and more.
- Everything is opt-in and each alert is sent only once โ tap "Send a Test Notification" to try it.
Personalize & privacy
๐จMake it yoursโถ
- Settings โ Appearance: pick an accent color (or any custom color) to re-theme the whole app โ green is the default.
- Choose Light, Dark, or System, and set your display currency.
- Give each budget category its own color and icon โ it flows through to charts, rings, and widgets.
- Add a Simple Finance widget: long-press the Home Screen โ + โ Simple Finance, then pick what it shows. There's an Apple Watch app and complication too.
๐Privacy, security & demoโถ
- Your data lives on your device and in your own private iCloud โ never on our servers.
- Settings โ Privacy & Security: require Face ID to open the whole app, or just to view Net Worth.
- Tap the eye icon on Home to hide all amounts (blur), with Face ID to reveal.
- Showing the app to someone? Turn on Demo Mode for realistic sample data โ your real numbers stay hidden and untouched.
Frequently asked questions
Where is my data stored?
On your device. If you turn on iCloud Sync (Settings โ iCloud Sync), your data also syncs through your own personal iCloud โ we never see it. See the privacy policy for details.
How do I sync between my iPhone and iPad?
Turn on Settings โ iCloud Sync on both devices (signed into the same Apple ID) and restart the app. Changes flow both ways automatically.
How does sharing with my spouse or family work?
Settings โ iCloud Sharing. A spouse/partner gets full two-way live syncing of your shared finances; family members get a read-only summary you control. Send invites through Messages and pick the person directly โ don't copy the link.
How does the Retirement Planner work?
The Plan tab simulates your finances year by year to the end of your plan, starting from the accounts and income you already track. It tests your odds across 500 market scenarios and a century of real history, models Social Security, taxes, RMDs, Roth conversions and more, and produces a shareable report. It's educational, not financial advice.
Can I plan with my partner before we're married?
Yes. In the planner's People & Retirement section you can add a partner and their assets (retirement, cash, car, etc.). They stay in the plan only โ never in your personal Net Worth โ until you combine finances, and the report shows a "You / Partner" split.
How do I add my investments?
Net Worth โ Stocks segment โ add an investment account (Brokerage, IRA, 401(k), HSA, 529, etc.), then add holdings by ticker and share count. Prices update automatically. You can also import from a brokerage CSV or a photo of a statement.
How do I export or share a report?
Tap the share icon on Home, Budget, Transactions, or Net Worth, choose a time period and sections, preview, then share as image, PDF, or CSV.
How do I back up my data?
Settings โ Data & Backup โ Export creates a complete JSON backup you can store anywhere. You can also turn on weekly automatic backups to iCloud Drive. Restoring a backup adds your data back โ it never wipes anything.
How do I lock the app?
Settings โ Privacy & Security โ App Lock uses Face ID or Touch ID. You can also blur amounts on screen with the eye icon.
What is Fin?
